Signs You Are Developing a Plantar Wart and What You Can Do About It New York, NY

Plantar warts are a common foot condition, but they’re often mistaken for calluses or ignored until they become painful. Knowing the early signs can help you treat them sooner and avoid complications. At the practice of Stuart J. Mogul, patients across New York City receive expert care for plantar warts and other foot conditions, with treatment plans tailored to each case.

Early Signs of a Plantar Wart

Plantar warts typically develop on the bottom of the foot, especially on weight-bearing areas like the heel or ball. One of the first signs is a small, rough growth that may look like a thickened patch of skin. Unlike a callus, however, a plantar wart often has tiny black dots within it. These are clotted blood vessels and a key indicator that you’re dealing with a wart.

You may also notice discomfort when walking or standing. Many patients describe it as feeling like they’re stepping on a pebble. Over time, pressure from walking can push the wart deeper into the skin, making it more painful and harder to treat.

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, plantar warts affect millions of Americans each year, with children, teens, and active adults at higher risk.

Causes and Risk Factors

Plantar warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which enters the skin through tiny cuts or abrasions. The virus thrives in warm, moist environments, which is why people often pick it up in places like locker rooms, public showers, and pool areas.

Not everyone exposed to HPV develops a wart. Your immune system plays a big role. However, certain factors increase your risk, including walking barefoot in shared spaces, having sweaty feet, or having a weakened immune system.

In a busy, walk-heavy environment like New York City, repeated pressure on the feet can also contribute to how plantar warts develop and spread.

Treatment Options That Work

Some plantar warts may go away on their own, but this can take months or even years. For many people, professional treatment is the fastest and most effective option.

Over-the-counter treatments, such as salicylic acid, can help in mild cases, but they require consistent use and may not fully remove deeper warts. In-office treatments are typically more reliable. These may include cryotherapy (freezing the wart), topical medications, laser therapy or minor surgical removal.

For persistent or painful warts, advanced treatments may be recommended to ensure complete removal and reduce the chance of recurrence. Early treatment is key, as warts can spread to other areas of the foot or even to other people.
