Hallux rigidus or osteoarthritis of the 1st metatarsophalangeal joint or MTPJ (joint at the base of the big toe) is a common toe condition. The symptoms are pain and stiffness in the toe. It causes pain and stiffness in the joint, and with time it gets increasingly harder to bend the toe. In some cases, surgery is the only way to eliminate or reduce pain. The type of surgery to correct this ailment will depend on the severity of the arthritis you have, what activities you would like to undertake and the shoes you wish to wear. Surgical options include Cheilectomy (minimally invasive surgery), Joint Replacement, and Fusion.

Dr. Mogul offers full out of network insurance benefits (we will contact your insurance company and submit your claim for you). Most policies reimburse patients for most of the cost of their foot surgery. Our surgical coordinator will help you with a quote.

I’m a huge Mogul fan! I have visited him many times for various foot ailments. I’m an avid runner in Central Park and my mileage causes a lot of things to come up that require a foot doctor’s treatment and/or advice. Not only is Dr. Mogul the best podiatrist I have ever met, he’s one of the best foot surgeons, period! I wish he could train other doctors. He is excellent at diagnosis, treatment and follow up. He has contacted me several times by phone to check on how I am doing after my big toe surgery. How many doctors do that?

* Hallux rigidus surgery is only considered after conservative management such as stretching, orthotics, exercise and shoe modification has been exhausted or deemed inappropriate. If you are uncertain if foot surgery is the best option for you please schedule a 2nd opinion consultation with the top rated NYC foot surgeon, Dr. Stuart Mogul.

The sooner this condition is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat. If you wait until bone spurs develop, your condition is likely to be more difficult to manage.

Hallux rigidus can occur spontaneously in some patients without any apparent cause. In other patients, there can be one or a combination of factors which trigger the development of this condition. People with flat feet and other structural deformities such as fallen arches and excessive pronation (rolling in) of the ankles are particularly susceptible to hallux rigidus because of the stress placed on their big toe joints. Some people may have a family history of the condition and inherit a foot type which is more prone to developing problems within the big toe joint. Hallux rigidus can also be triggered by sports injury, inflammation or even an infection.

Symptoms of Hallux Rigidus include:

  • Pain and stiffness during movement.
  • Problems with athletic activities such as running or playing soccer.
  • Swelling and inflammation around the joint.
  • Symptoms are worse during cold and damp weather.

At a more advanced stage, symptoms include:

  • Pain when resting.
  • Development of bony bumps (osteophyte) may develop on the top of the joint which can rub on shoes.
  • People may walk on the outer side of the foot to avoid pain from the big toe. This can produce
