Heel pain is most often caused by “plantar fasciitis”, a foot condition that is sometimes called heel spur syndrome. Heel pain may also be due to other causes, such as a stress fracture, tendonitis, arthritis, nerve irritation, or a cyst.

Please note: A doctor’s referral is NOT necessary from a General Practitioner to see our NYC foot surgeon for a  plantar fascittis consultation, 2nd opinion, or for treatment at our practice.

Dr. Mogul offers full out of network insurance benefits (we will contact your insurance company and submit your claim for you). You will enjoy the luxury and benefit of academic medicine in a top rated concierge environment without the hassle of long hospital waiting room times and paperwork. Most policies reimburse patients for most of the cost of their foot surgery. Our surgical coordinator will help you with a quote.

“Dr. Mogul is a great guy and he is very accommodating (stayed late for me because I couldn’t get off of work). I went to see him because my feet had been hurting for years and I decided enough was enough. I was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. One of the few doctors around NYC who takes the time to actually listen to you, examine you and recommend treatment, along with pros and cons of any questions you may have. I was very happy to have found him. I am pain free now and could not be happier”. ~ YELP

Causes of Heel Pain / Plantar Fasciitis

The causes of of heel pain are not fully understood in the medical community but are linked to wear and tear of the tendons and an incomplete healing process. The wear and tear, whether as a result of a sporting injury or a gradual, cumulative effect, causes the tendon to thicken. It becomes painful and inflexible. The cause of wear and tear varies from one individual, but may be due to:

  • Doing too much, particularly sports, which has a high impact on the heel, such as long distance running.
  • Doing too little and becoming overweight due to sedentary lifestyle and therefore putting the heel under excess pressure.
  • Having very tight calf muscles. This is a problem some people are simply born with. The effect of having very tight muscles is like walking permanently on tip toes, putting the Achilles tendon and the arch of the foot under increased strain.
  • Calcaneal bone stress fracture.
  • Irritation of small nerves around the heel.
  • Thinning of the protective pad/tissue on the heel.

Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

  • Your heels hurts during walking, long standing and worse in morning.
  • Heel pain begins in underside of your heel and can radiate into the toes and up the inside of the foot.
  • You have flat feet and usually between 20-40+ years old.

* Surgery is only considered after conservative management such as stretching, orthotics, exercise, shoe modification, and injection therapy including PRP injections has been exhausted or deemed inappropriate.
